The Doctrines that Divide by Erwin Lutzer
The subtitle of this wonder volume pretty much sums up the contents: “A Fresh Look at the Historic Doctrines That Separate Christians.” This is an absolutely marvelous book, which accomplishes two valuable things. It gives a solid overview of important doctrines, and it gives the church history background (and battles) pertaining to these doctrines — either would have been worth the price of the book. The doctrines covered include the deity and humanity of Christ, justification, the Lord’s Supper, baptism, the canon, predestination and eternal security. There are also chapters devoted to a discussion of whether Mary was the mother of God and whether Peter was the first pope.
What can I say, this book is a must read.
